Concussions and Post-Concussion Syndrome Therapy in Markham
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when the brain is jolted or shaken inside the skull. This can happen from a blow to the head or body, a fall, or any other impact that causes the brain to move quickly back and forth within the skull. Concussions are common and can happen to anyone, but are most frequently seen in sports, car accidents, and slips/falls.
Common Concussion Symptoms
Symptoms of a concussion can vary, but commonly include headache, dizziness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and sensitivity to light and noise. In some cases, individuals may lose consciousness or experience memory loss. Symptoms typically develop within the first 24 to 48 hours following the injury, but can persist for several weeks or even months.
Common Post-Concussion Syndrome Symptoms
Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is a set of symptoms that can persist for weeks or months following a concussion. These symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. In some cases, individuals may also experience sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression. PCS is believed to be related to the physiological and metabolic changes that occur in the brain following a concussion. While most individuals recover fully from a concussion within a few weeks, some may develop PCS and require ongoing treatment and management at our Markham chiropractic clinic.
